NOHjorundfjorden, Sunnmore, Norway
The Sunnmore Alps
Mountains straight out of black water, and no cruise ships.
Watch it live firstWhen the light is best
April, May, June
Computed from five years of daily cloud, rain and temperature at 62.23, 6.62. Some cloud is what makes a sky burn, so this is not the same as the driest month and often disagrees with one.

When to actually go
June and July for the midnight sun and the walking. September for autumn colour and far better odds of dramatic sky.
This is the window for the reason you are going, and it is a different question from the light. Where the two disagree, this one wins. An empty river under a perfect sky is still an empty river.

Why here
Hjorundfjorden is the fjord the big ships cannot get into, which is the entire recommendation. The Sunnmore Alps come out of the water at an angle that does not look real, and in June the light never properly leaves, so the golden hour lasts most of the night.
What you actually do
- The fjord itself, by small boat or the local ferry
- Slogen, a serious climb with one of the great views in Europe
- Alesund, rebuilt entirely in art nouveau after a fire
- The Trollstigen road, if it is open
However many of you
On your own
Norway is easy and safe alone. The one caution is that the walking here is genuinely mountainous and the weather turns fast.
Two to six
A car, a ferry and a small hotel on the fjord. Four people, five nights, and no schedule.
Seven or more
Rent a whole lodge and a minibus. Norway is expensive, and a group sharing self catering is the difference between costly and impossible.
