When to actually go
Puffins are on Skomer from April to late July. The cliffs and the light are good from March to October.
This is the window for the reason you are going, and it is a different question from the light. Where the two disagree, this one wins. An empty river under a perfect sky is still an empty river.

Why here
Pembrokeshire is a hundred and eighty miles of cliff path above water that turns turquoise in the right light, with a chain of small islands offshore that hold some of the largest seabird colonies in Europe. It is also cheap, close, and almost entirely undiscovered by anybody who is not British.

- The boat to Skomer for the puffins, booked well ahead
- The coast path between Broad Haven and Marloes
- St Davids, the smallest city in Britain, and its cathedral
- Barafundle Bay, which is a walk from the nearest road and worth it

On your own
The coast path is waymarked the whole way and the buses along it are designed for walkers. Ideal solo walking country.

A cottage near Marloes and a car. Four people, four nights, and a different stretch of path each day.
Seven or more
Large farmhouses are the standard rental here and cost very little. Skomer boats are capped, so book those first and build the week around them.
